JESUS, THE CHAMPION: Colossians 2:13-15

Colossians 2:13-15

13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authoritiesand put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

In Colossians Paul is going to great lengths to proclaim that Jesus is the Champion in three ways. He shows us that Jesus is the champion because he made us alive. We were “dead in our trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh” therefore we did not have the capacity to see ourselves as sinful and we could not see our need for a savior because we were dead spirituality. But God made us alive.
Jesus is also our Champion because he paid our debt by nailing it to the cross. Jesus was the only one who could pay our debt.  Paul tells us in Colossians 1:19 “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” He did this to reconcile “to himself all things… by making peace by his blood.” Col 1:20. Peace was achieved because our debt was paid.
Paul continues to remind us that Jesus is the Champion over all God disarmed Satan and all spiritual powers that oppose Him. He did this through Jesus’ work on the cross. And through Jesus we get to take part in His victory. Paul says in Romans 8:37 that “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
