SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 6:1-4 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
BIG IDEA
The most important person in your life is your father. He has more power than anyone to influence you—for good or for evil. Hearing the word “father,” does it conjure up amazing memories, or does it cause you to sense loss because he has abandoned, betrayed, failed you? What kind of father are or will you be? In Christ, we have a loving Father. God the Father has adopted us into his divine family through the substitutionary work of Jesus to take away our sin and make us righteous. God the Father doesn’t provoke us, and does bring us up in discipline and instruction. Dads are to strive to father their children the same way that God father’s his.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Was there anything from Sunday’s Sermon or the Big Idea that was new to you or had an affect on you? Did you hear anything that raised more questions in your mind?
2. What stands out to you in Ephesians 6:1-4 and why? What questions do you have about the passage?
GOOD WORD
The good news is that you aren’t the hero, Dads. Jesus is the Hero. The good news is that this whole thing is not riding on our unstable performance and constant failures as earthly fathers. This whole thing- our righteousness, our acceptance to God the Father- is riding on Jesus’ perfect performance as an earthly Son. He lived for righteousness. He died for sin. He arose for salvation. We’ve got a good Dad, forever.
