BIG IDEA
The mission of every church and every Christian is to make disciples of all nations. Why? Because Jesus has all authority and that’s exactly what He said to do. A disciple is someone who has received a new identity by grace from Jesus, through faith in Jesus. A disciple is someone who has been adopted into the family of God as God’s child. Why do people need to become disciples of Jesus? Because those who are not disciples are in the path of the wrath of God. How will people become disciples? By Christian’s being intentional to tell others the gospel and by the Holy Spirit’s life giving grace, who makes dead sinners alive in Christ when Christians tell people the gospel. Are you a disciple?
SCRIPTURE
Matthew 28:18-20
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'”
DISCUSSION
1. Was there anything from Sunday’s Sermon or the Big Idea that had an affect on you or was new? Did you hear anything that raised more questions in your mind?
Mark 8:35
“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?”
John 1:12-13
“But to all who did receive [Jesus], who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
Romans 1:18
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
Romans 2:5
“[Sinners are] storing up wrath for [themselves] on the day of wrath when God’s
righteousness judgement will be revealed.”
John 3:36
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
Mark 16:15-16
“And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.'”
Luke 24:46-47
“And said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.'”
Ephesians 2:4-5, 8
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ…By grace you have been saved through faith.”
2. What stands out to you from any of these Scripture passages and why?
3. Why is it the goal and mission of every Church and every Christian to make disciples? Would you say this is the mission of most Christians you know? What about Churches?
4. Is it truly your mission and goal to obey Jesus and make disciples? Why or why not? What do you need to repent of?
5. Spend some time praying for one another.
GOOD WORD
Are you a disciple of Jesus? Have you stopped trying to achieve an identity trough the idols and received a new identity through faith in Jesus? If so: your sins? forgiven because of Jesus’ death for your sin on the cross. Your righteousness? freely given because of Jesus’ sinless life for you. Your identity? sinless and righteous adopted Child of God. Your future? Secure, because Jesus will one day perfect you and bring you into His eternal Kingdom where your joy and His glory will be fully realized.
